urban legends

Have you ever received or sent out an email warning people of some sort of danger? Well you have just been involved in an Urban Legends. Urban Legends are started by word or mouth or in this case via email, an urban legend usually starts off with this happened to me or this happened to F.O.M(friend of mines). While there are many that are circling the net, the stories of Tommy Hilfiger, a cuckolded husband, and Mentos vs. Coca Cola will be addressed.

Oprah Winfrey threw Tommy Hilfiger off her show because he made a comment saying “that if he knew black people or Asians was going to wear his clothes, then he would have never designed them”. This story originated back to the year of 1996 where as a tabloid in the Philippines took something that was supposedly said to a CNN stylist making several remarks against Asians saying he prefer that “these people” don’t where his clothes. But in 1999 an article was released from the producers at the Oprah Winfrey show saying that Tommy Hilfiger has never been a guest on the show so how could Oprah throw him if he was never a guest. So if you have ever received this email then I’m here to put your mind at ease and tell you that according to snopes.com this story is false.

A cuckolded husband presented his wife the head of her lover Stephen Schap. This story originated in December 8, 1993 in Germany. Gregory Glover decapitated one of his army buddies after finding out through not only his wife’s diary but through her mouth when she announced that she wanted a divorce and that the baby she was about to give birth to wasn’t his. As if finding out that his wife was cheating wasn’t bad enough but rather to find out that it was someone who he trusted. So at hearing this Glover became enrage and decided that schap had to pay once and for all, so he went over to schap with ever intention on killing him. Glover and schap got into it, next thing you know glover took schaps head completely off and brought it to the hospital and placed it next to his wife bedside just before she went into labor. Later on down the line Glover was caught and received the life sentence with no parole. According to snopes.com this story is true because of not only the evidence but rather the police reports as well.

According to snopes.com this urban legend about Mentos vs. Coca Cola is completely false. This story started back in the 90’s, which stated” that if you drink a whole bunch of Coca Cola and mix it with Mentos at the same time, your stomach would explode. After serious of testes that story proved that your stomach would not explode but rather you would have an extreme stomach ache, and it also warned not to try and push the limits of consistently doing this experiment at home because of what some of the consequences might be. So if you have received this email there are two things not to do: 1). NOT BELIEVE IT. 2). DON’T TRY THIS EXPERIMENT AT HOME!

To restate in the conclusion of this paper not everything you hear is completely true but rather they are what people call “Urban Legends”. So if you have received an email warning you about something or it starts out by saying this either happened to me or f.o.m (friend of mine) then know you have fell victim of an urban legend. You should not panic but rather should just take the topic of suppose it email and go to snopes.com whereas it will clarify it for you as to whether it is true or not.

Hip hop #1

- When I hear a rap song, I pay more attention to the beat than to the lyrics.
I believe that its with anyone that when a song comes on that we really dont pay attention to the lyrics, along with the beat we move and sway our hips but then realizing that the more we listen to it the more we become familiarized with the lyrics, which would turn alot people off. The quote that supports this is "It's only-at the end of the day, it's only entertainment". I support this quote because so many people get offended easily but they also need to realize that just like we go to school or work we do our job so does the artist, its their job to produce smashing records at any cost.

Movie comparisions

The two movies we watched was very insightful. The one with the womens point of view really had me look at ads different, with the way it showed even little girls with their hands over their mouth. Also solgans like "it wasnt my personality he was digging" in reference to the sell of jeans .It kind of made me feel offended because as a female sometimes if we like how the jeans fit we buy them we dont neccessarily pay attention to the slogan which from now on i will. Or just like for an example society has women thinking their body is not up to par with how its suppose to look, like having a big bust, hippy and a slim waistline. The same can be applied to men, where as they have to have big muscles and strong. If a guy was to step outside of the model figure for men and look different then society wouldnt really accept it. Whether it was women being slienced in ad's by means of mouth covering or under the impression shes dead, to thin or rather guys with their big muscles playin the tough role, to me its just crazy because those are things men and women just cant live up to. I feel like if society can accept us for who we are instead of who we pretend to be then forget them we shouldnt compromise or values just to satisfy them.

superbowl advertisements

Superbowl Advertisements

When superbowl comes around there is no doubt in anyone mind about watching it, during this time it also gives advertisers an opportunity to sell their product through funny gut-busting commercials. Some people I know for a fact only watches the superbowl for the commercials. Advertisers knows exactly how to catch their audience because if the commerical is good enough it would have the consumer wanting and eventually buying the product.

key concepts

Concept 1 :All media messages are constructed.
I have learned alot about this concept. Many advertisers use it as a gimmick to selling their product. For example: Proactive they use Jessica Simpson saying"that you will be successful as her upon using this product", when you look deeper into that statement it could mean a variety of things like for instance, it could mean you can have a successful career or that you may have successful results. So with that being said, the next time you buy a product or see it on tv ask yourself these questions, "How will this product benefit me?" ,"Am I getting this product because i have seen the results for someone else and want to see if its the same outcome for me?", "Or do i really need this product?"
